Is It Just Aches And Pains? Deciding When To See A Doctor

The news is always telling us how oversubscribed doctors are and how they are struggling to cope with rising demand. That puts a lot of people off going to the doctors. Some people, on the other hand, will go to the doctors for the slightest ache or pain and take up valuable time that they could be using to see patients with more serious problems.

Neither of those people are getting it right. It’s important that you see a doctor if you actually have something wrong with you, but you also need to make sure you aren’t bothering them with things that will just pass naturally in a couple of days. If you’re too cautious, you could end up neglecting a health issue that needs seeing to, but how are you supposed to know when you need a doctor and when you don’t? These are some of the best ways to decide.



How Long Has The Problem Lasted?



This is your biggest indicator of whether you need to go to the doctors or not. There are a lot of health problems which, if they only last a couple of days, are nothing to worry about. But if they’re persisting for weeks then they could be a symptom of something a lot worse. If, for example, you’ve got a pain in your knee, that’s not something to worry about if it lasts a day or two. We all get aches and pains, especially as we get older. But if you’ve got a constant pain that’s lasting weeks or even months, there’s probably something wrong that needs to be seen to by a doctor.



Coughs and colds are another thing to watch out for. They should pass in a week or so but if you’ve had one that you can’t shake for a long while, that might be a sign that you’ve got a chest infection or an issue with your lungs. Often, when a small health problem that is usually nothing lasts for a long while, it’s the beginnings of something a lot more serious so you shouldn’t neglect it.



How Much Pain Are You In?



There isn’t an exact science behind this one because everybody experiences pain in a different way, you just have to use your judgment. If you’re in a little pain but it’s more of an annoyance than anything, you can usually leave it a bit before seeing a doctor. Unless of course, you’ve had that same pain for a long time. But if you’re in so much pain that you can’t function properly, there’s something not right and you should see a doctor right away.



If the problem is pain, the doctor’s first port of call will be to prescribe some painkillers and see whether it passes in a few days. If the pain isn’t too unbearable, you can save yourself a trip and just take some over the counter painkillers yourself. You might find that it’s fine in a day or two and you never need to go to the doctors. If the pain still carries on after that, particularly if it’s getting worse, then it’s time to seek medical help.



As a general rule, you should think about how the pain is affecting your day to day life. If you can still do everything that you normally do, you’re probably fine, but if it’s making it hard to get around or lift things etc. you need to see somebody.



Has It Happened Before?



The symptoms of a disease or injury can often subside for a while and then pop up again in future, so even if they aren’t lasting that long, it’s a warning sign if they keep happening over and over. For example, if you’ve had a cold that lasted a week or so, then a month later it happens again. This keeps happening over and over and it seems like you’re constantly catching a cold every couple of weeks, that could be an indicator of an underlying problem. It might also mean that you’ve got a weak immune system or you’re suffering from allergies, particularly in the summertime, but it’s still worth getting checked out.



When it comes to pain, a big sign that you’ve got a long term injury is if you’re repeatedly getting a pain when you do certain things. Say, for example, every time you lift something a bit heavy, you get a twinge in your shoulder or your knees ache whenever you doing an exercise routine, that’s a cause for concern. Even though those injuries aren’t causing you problems when you’re just walking around, experiencing pain when you exert slight pressure on the area isn’t healthy.



Certain Symptoms Can’t Be Ignored



All of the advice you’ve heard up to this point is good, but there are some exceptions to the rule. There are certain symptoms that can’t be left a day or two because they’re usually the result of something very urgent. If you’ve got severe chest pains or difficulty breathing, doctors will always recommend you come to see them right away.



Persistent vomiting is another big risk factor. When we say persistent, we don’t mean vomiting a couple of times a day for a few days, that’s likely to be a stomach bug that will pass. But if you’re constantly throwing up every hour or even more, you’re at risk of serious dehydration and there could be something really nasty in your body that’s causing it. You need medical attention right away to deal with whatever is causing it and make sure that you’ve got enough fluids because severe dehydration can be a medical emergency in some cases.



Anybody that has allergies should be treated with extra caution if they experience symptoms outside of their normal reaction. In them, something that would ordinarily be left a few days might be life threatening so it’s important that they get medical attention right away, just to be sure.



Overall, you just need to use your best judgment and wait a few days to see whether things improve before rushing to the doctor’s office.
